…planning my escape
A work in progress
the truth
Categories: Cycling, Thoughts

I love riding my bike but I hate all the high school crap that goes along with it. I truly envy those of you that have your cycling groups that ride very week with the sense of security and comradery¬†that I feel is missing in mine. I say it in such a manner because according to those around me, it might all be either in my head or of my own doing. This brings me to the topic of truth. We all live our lives in a state of half truths. If we say what’s really on our mind we risk hurting the feelings of someone we care for, which translates into social punishment in a variety of forms. To be considered as mean is not something that I like. I think it is much easier for a male to speak the truth than a female to do so. I was raised by a man (motherless daughter) who didn’t censor his comments . I think by nurture or nature (probably nature) I behave in the same way. It doesn’t seem to work well for me. I pay the price for burning my bridges all the time (however satisfying it may be). Perhaps this is why I always feel as though I don’t really belong anywhere, personally or professionally (although this is a long story). Why is it o.k. to sugar coat things and not speak the truth? Can nobody deal with the truth? I know it is difficult, I really do. But the truth forces you to think about a situation and deal with it more accurately instead of reinforcing the lies that we ¬†choose to believe. Just tell me straight up what you are thinking. I’ll deal with it head on, then I’ll move on….

On a similar note, this episode of This American Life is particularly timely. It is called Frenemies. If you have any time at all to listen to it, you won’t be disappointed. I especially like Act Three: speak now or forever hold your peace.

I wish I was more like you and spoke my mind instead of holding it inside! It’s not healthy to keep it bottled up. Most of the time I don’t even know how I feel. I admire you for your forthrightness and honesty. Belle is the same way, I love it.

we’ve got each other! no need to keep the frenemies around :)
